It was lovely to have Revd Nigel Mason and his wife Cathy back eith us again.<\/p>

Jesus, with his disciples, has withdrawn to an area outside Northern Israel. They are close to Tyre and Sidon.<\/p>

A Canaanite woman calls out to Jesus for help. With an absence of response from Jesus, the disciples suggest he sends her away. \u00a0The significance this non-Israeli woman gives to Jesus is amazing. \u00a0She calls him \u2018Lord\u2019, \u2018Son of David\u2019, asks for his mercy and she kneels before Him, explaining her daughter\u2019s suffering from demon possession. \u00a0Her persistence in perusing Jesus reveals a conviction that the answers to such a need lie with Him.<\/p>

First Jesus tells her that he was only sent , \u201cfor the lost sheep of Israel\u201d. \u00a0She continues, \u201cLord, help me\u201d.<\/p>

What might be considered a harsh reply , \u201cit is not right to take the children\u2019s bread and toss it to their dogs\u201d, comes from within the context that all non- Israelis were loosely referred to as \u2018dogs\u2019 – ie other than them. \u00a0She agrees but reminds Jesus that even the dogs can eat the crumbs which fall from \u2018their master\u2019s table\u2019 .<\/p>

It was suggested here that there may have been some humour in this communication but in any case Jesus\u2019 attitude would have been \u00a0compassionate. \u00a0There is also a possible link here to the feeding of the five thousand, with 12 baskets of leftovers and Jesus\u2019 saying of himself, \u201cI am the bread of life\u201d.<\/p>

Ultimately this woman is commended for her \u2018great faith\u2019 and her daughter is restored to her. \u00a0Sadly, many of Jesus\u2019 own people, in contrast, had failed to recognise Him.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
